Executive summary

The last two years have seen an explosion in the development of solar-plus-storage. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, as of June 2018 there was 783 MW of solar tied to 492 MW of storage across the US, with plans for a further 3.2 GW of PV plus almost 2.9 GW of batteries. The analyst firm says 51 hybrid systems of 1 MW or more are operating or planned in the country. This number is likely to rise sharply as the cost of battery storage continues to fall and the benefits from attaching batteries to solar farms increase.

For PV plant owners, however, the addition of storage represents an extra layer of complexity in terms of operations and maintenance (O&M). With solar-plus-storage set to be more relevant than ever at the Solar PV Operations USA 2019 conference on November 6 and 7, at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Hotel in California, this white paper aims to provide a brief overview of the O&M considerations.
